The most important Finnish architect of the 20th century, Alvar Aalto () was a central figure in international modernism. His greatest buildings, like the Viipuri Library and Paimio Sanatorium, fused the naturalism of Finnish romanticism with modernist ideals: as did his influential furniture and glassware. During the course of a career spanning more than fifty years, Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto () designed nearly one hundred single-family houses. Aalto, also known for his furniture and glassware, worked in a distinctive style that blended modernism and traditional vernacular architecture. Artek and the Aaltos: Creating a Modern World was the first exhibition in the United States to examine Artek, a pioneering Finnish design company founded in , and the first to have a specific focus on the two architect co-founders, Alvar Aalto (–) and Aino Marsio-Aalto (–). The exhibition considered the Aaltos’ shared. The director of Ateneum Art museum, Susanna Pettersson, became aware of Alvar Aalto when she was learning the alphabeth from her grandparent’s old phone book.
